Just under 14,000 visitors came through the doors for the chance to see the 143m long stunning Scottish artwork. Among the thousands of comments left, some of the best which sum up the success of the exhibition include: ‘A wonderful day out’ ‘Absolutely stunning’ ‘Certainly an education’ ‘Makes me feel very proud to be Scottish’
Comments from Jane Masters, New Lanark Heritage Manager: "We have been overwhelmed with the success of the Great Tapestry exhibition here at New Lanark, and are delighted with the response to our programme of textile workshops & talks. New Lanark really was the perfect setting for this spectacular work of art, and we hope that people who enjoyed their visit to see the tapestry will come and enjoy a day out to New Lanark again soon"
After recently gaining ‘Volunteer Friendly’ status from Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire, New Lanark recruited 24 volunteers who generously gave 245 hours of their time to support the successful running of the exhibition.
Throughout November, New Lanark also hosted a series of exciting textiles and history themed workshops to celebrate the Great Tapestry being in residence at the World Heritage Site. The workshops have ranged from ‘Learn to knit’ classes to a family event with best-selling author Allan Burnett, who wrote ‘The Story of Scotland’ the children’s book inspired by the tapestry.
After successfully hosting the Great Tapestry of Scotland, New Lanark will once again play host to the Prestonpans Tapestry from the 27thof January to the 19th of March 2015. Also designed by Andrew Crummy, the 104m long Prestonpans Tapestry tells the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s journey from France to victory at Prestonpans in 1745.
"We can’t wait to kick off the New Year and our 2015 Events Programme by welcoming the Prestonpans Tapestry back to New Lanark. Hopefully a lot of people who have been inspired by the Great Tapestry of Scotland will visit us again for a chance to see the Prestonpans Tapestry" Jane Masters, New Lanark Heritage Manager "All of the latest information on our 2015 events will be available on our website www.newlanark.org very soon"
The Great Tapestry of Scotland will next be exhibited at Stirling Castle from 31 January - 8 March 2015.
Now in its 30th year, the show is the go-to exhibition for any self-builders or renovators looking for practical tips, expert advice, or the chance to view 1000s of products.
