Last year, over 13 thousand visitors flocked to New Lanark World Heritage Site to see the famous Great Tapestry of Scotland. Continuing on from that success, New Lanark is very proud to be welcoming the Prestonpans Tapestry for a 7-week exhibition starting on Tuesday 27th January, and ending on Thursday 19th March – with free entry to viewers.
Stitched entirely by volunteers, the 104m long tapestry celebrates the enduring triumph of youthful hope and ambition. Through metre-wide embroidered panels, the tapestry depicts the journey 25 year old Bonnie Prince Charlie made from France then through the Scottish Highlands to victory at Prestonpans in 1745.
Both designed by Andrew Crummy, The Prestonpans Tapestry is the artwork that inspired the creation of the Great Tapestry of Scotland, and has already been successfully exhibited at New Lanark in 2013.
"We’re delighted to be exhibiting The Prestonpans Tapestry at New Lanark. With the success of the Great Tapestry of Scotland exhibition here, we saw that people in the local area have a real interest in historical & creative exhibitions, so we hope that many of them return to see The Prestonpans Tapestry" Jane Masters, New Lanark Heritage Manager.
To celebrate the exhibition, New Lanark is hosting a number of linked events. The first of which is a ‘Living History’ day on Saturday 21st February. From 11.30am-4pm the British Redcoats & Jacobites will be parading around New Lanark. The ‘Living History’ experience is free to view, and visitors can expect to discover what the soldiers wore & how they used their formidable weaponry. The second event is a talk with historian Arran Johnston on Friday 13th March at 7.30pm in the New Lanark School for Children. Arran or Bonnie Prince Charlie as he is better known in re-enactment circles will be discussing ‘The Battle of Prestonpans and the Prestonpans Tapestry’.
