New Lanark seeking volunteers for Quaker Tapestry exhibition

After successfully hosting the famous Great Tapestry of Scotland last year and the Prestonpans Tapestry at the beginning of 2015, New Lanark is continuing its textile theme by hosting a touring exhibition of the Quaker Tapestry.

“Some of Robert Owen’s partners were Quakers and in a perfect link, we are delighted to be displaying the Quaker Tapestry this summer.” says Jane Masters, New Lanark Heritage Manager.

The tapestry tells of Quaker events and insights and is a celebration of the significant contribution these quiet, non-conformists have made to the modern world. Over 4,000 men, women and children in 15 countries ‘had a hand’ in the creation of the 77 panels which form the tapestry.

Usually housed in Kendal's historic Friends Meeting House, New Lanark will be displaying 20 panels from the beautiful tapestry. As such, New Lanark are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help steward the exhibition. An interest or knowledge of the Quakers is desirable, but not necessary – a welcoming smile will do! New Lanark was awarded ‘Volunteer Friendly’ status by Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire in 2014 and has a friendly and diverse team of volunteers. Flexible hours and shifts are available, and typical duties will include meeting/greeting visitors, answering enquiries & helping with sales of Quaker Tapestry merchandise.

The Quaker Tapestry will be displayed in the New Lanark Institute 10am-5pm daily from Tuesday 11th August – Saturday 29th August. Entry to the exhibition is free, but a ticket is required for the rest of the Visitor Centre exhibitions.
