Judges form Lanark Gardening Club and Lanark in Bloom faced tough decisions after visiting the eleven gardens competing for this year’s Royal Burgh of Lanark Community Council awards.
Cary Jones, judge and member of the gardening club, said: “The standard was very good, very different and very varied.
“The three judges look at various different factors including structure of the garden, enthusiasm and the ‘wow’ factor – which we got in a few places this year.”
Liz Gray from Lanark Gardening Club and Ernest Romer from Lanark in Bloom completed the judging panel for the competition which has three categories: large, small to medium and courtyard or container garden.
Winner of the large garden award, John Prior, has been tending his plants at Friarsfield Road for 40 years and his flower beds on the corner plot provide a stunning spectacle for the enjoyment of all who pass.
As well as a myriad of amazing plants, John’s garden is full of surprises including a water feature, a peacock and a roof top beehive, with over 40,000 bees to help pollinate the plants and supply honey - beautifully flavoured by nectar from the adjacent lime tree.
Tucked round the back of their Honeyman Crescent home, David and Janet Tait have created a spectacular outdoor space and the first-time entrants are thrilled to have won the award in the small to medium garden category.
In the enclosed oasis, strawberries, blueberries and peas thrive in tubs amongst a wide variety of plants and magnificent hanging baskets.
Janet said: “We are delighted to have won. Gardening is my hobby and we buy all our plants locally and I get my compost from Clydeside Trading.”
Another hidden gem, the winning courtyard and container garden is the handiwork of Drew Towse, Westport.
Containers of all sizes are filled with flowers including lilies, daisies and begonias, in a colour scheme which Drew changes every year.
Drew said: “I was really surprised to win this year as this is the third year, but maybe its because it is so different from the blue and yellow from last year.”
Eleanor McLean, secretary of the Community Council, said: “Strictly Come Gardening has been running now for a couple of years in its new format and has been a great success.
“The Community Council would like to congratulate the winners and thank the judges for their valuable time.
“We want to encourage people to enter and get some recognition for their hard work and it’s also a great way of exposing some of the hidden gems around the town.”
The awards will be presented to all the winners and runners up at the first meeting of the Lanark Gardening Club, in September.
The gardening club, founded in 1975, would like to extend an invitation to anyone with an interest in gardening to join and participate in its programme of events.
From September to April, members meet on the third Thursday of the month, with an emphasis on an informal format where keen gardeners can learn from one and other.
Winners and runner up are as follows:
Large Garden
Winner – John Prior, Friarsfield Road
Runner-up – Armour and Margaret Kenyon, St Mungos
Small to Medium Garden
Winner – David and Janet Tait, Honeyman Crescent
Runner-up – Jacqueline Pryde, Melvinhall Road
Courtyard or Container Garden
Winner – Drew Towse, Westport
Runner-up – Mr and Mrs Sliman, Gushet Place.
Now in its 30th year, the show is the go-to exhibition for any self-builders or renovators looking for practical tips, expert advice, or the chance to view 1000s of products.
