Growing careers with the RHS at Castlebank Horticultural Centre

Castlebank Horticultural Centre in Lanark will soon be offering a horticultural qualification through the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Castlebank Horticultural Centre will be offering the ‘RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture’. This qualification is designed for individuals wanting a route to employment in professional horticulture or further development. The theory-based qualification helps learners by assessing their knowledge of the principles which underpin horticultural practices. The qualification is comprised of two certificates:

• RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance
• RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Health and Applied Propagation

The qualification will be delivered at Castlebank Horticultural Centre from 21st September 2020. The Horticultural Centre features a recently renovated Community Hub building and a community growing area with multiple raised beds and polytunnels. Students will have the chance to enhance their theoretical learning by viewing practical demonstrations or undertaking practical activities within the Horticultural Centre or wider area of Castlebank Park.

The qualification will be taught by Castlebank Horticultural Centre’s Educational Gardener, a post which is funded through The National Lottery Community Fund.

There are no entry requirements for the course and each unit is assessed by examinations which take place in February and June. The course will run one day a week for 30 weeks. The course will run from September 2020 to June 2021, with RHS examinations in February and June 2021.

There is also the opportunity for a young person to be awarded a fully funded bursary to complete the course. On 28 June 2019, HRH The Duke of Rothesay visited Castlebank Park and met with around 100 people involved in the park’s development including volunteers, young people, project funders and partners. Following the visit, The Prince’s Charities has given a generous donation towards the ongoing development of the park. The Duke of Rothesay is a well-known advocate of championing youth education, and as such, Lanark Community Development Trust has chosen to allocated a proportion of this donation towards a fully-funded bursary place for one young person to complete the RHS Level 2 Principles of Horticulture course in 2020/2021.

BURSARY CRITERIA
To apply for the 2020/2021 Bursary, candidates must be:
• Aged 30 or under (as of September 2019)
• Unemployed or working 16 hours or under per week
• NOT in full time education
• Able to commit to a full day of class per week (Monday 9.30am – 4.30pm)
• Able to travel to Castlebank Horticultural Centre (via own vehicle or public transport)

BURSARY AWARD
The recipient of the bursary will not directly receive any cash or remuneration. The bursary award equates to £600 which covers the course fees and examination fees for the February and June exams. The bursary award does not cover travel costs, sustenance, recommended reading material or any other expenses incurred.

The grantee of the bursary will be selected on the basis of the answers given to the questions on the form, and may be invited to an interview ahead of the place being offered.
