Friday 15th May: Virtual Medieval Feasting!
On Friday, the 15th of May at 2pm BST, we'll be meeting to discuss the various foods and traditions of Medieval Feasting, and we'll wrap up by making traditional no-bake gingerbread!

This activity is suitable for ages 4+, but may need some minor parent preparation.

For this activity, you will need: Water, 4 tbps honey, 1 mug of breadcrumbs, Ginger, Cinnamon, Food Colouring (any colour, optional)

Friday 22nd May: Virtual Crown-Making!
On Friday, 22nd of May, we'll be hosting another event via Zoom -
this time we'll be making crowns!

This activity is suitable for ages 6+ (with some minor parent help possibly required).

For this activity you will need: Sturdy paper, of whichever colour you'd like your crown (I'll be using yellow), Round head paper fasteners & a hole punch (if you can't get these, a stapler could do the trick), Scissors, Glue, Tape, Items to decorate your crown (sequins, glitter, markers, etc.)

Friday 29th May: Virtual Ship-Making!
On Friday, 29th of May at 2pm BST, we'll be hosting another event via Zoom - this time we'll be making Viking Longships!

This activity is suitable for ages 6+ (with some minor parent help possibly required).

For this activity you will need: Ship template (emailed upon event signup), Cardboard, Glue, Tape, Peg, toothpicks and Popsicle sticks, and coloured paper for mast & steering (optional), Markers, Construction paper, Anything else you'd like to decorate your ships.

Friday 5th June: Virtual Sundial-Making
On Friday 5th June, 2pm BST, we’ll me meeting again via Zoom. In this activity, we’ll talk about a typical medieval day, and the history of timekeeping. To wrap up, we’ll be making sundials, which was one of the most common methods of timekeeping before the widespread use of mechanical clocks.

This activity is suitable for children aged 6+

For this activity you will need: Paper plate (or round a circle of cardboard of similar size and a white piece of paper), Tall Peg (Pen can be used), Tape, Markers, Medium lump of clay, playdough or blue tack.

Friday 12th June: Virtual Mason's Marks Making
On Friday 12th June, 2pm BST we’ll be meeting again via Zoom! In this activity, we’ll be looking into Mason’s Marks – what they mean, the various forms, and some that exist at the castle. To wrap up, we’ll be creating our own version of a mason’s mark.

This activity is suitable for children aged 5+

For this activity, you will need: Corn starch (Corn flour), PVA glue, Vegetable oil (or a similar oil), A pencil or toothpick to carve clay with.

Friday 19th June: Virtual Medieval Technology
On Friday 19th June, 2pm BST, we’ll be meeting again via Zoom. In this activity, we’ll be looking at the key differences in technology between the Medieval period and today – including lighting, transportation, fuels and heating. We’ll wrap up by making a faux torch of our own:

For this activity you’ll need: Dark construction paper, Scissors, Glue, Tape.

Friday 26th June: Virtual Medieval Games
On Friday 26th June, 2pm BST, we’ll be meeting again via Zoom. In this activity, we’ll be looking at Medieval leisure activities, including both indoor and outdoor games. We’ll wrap up by making a board and pieces for our own set of ‘Throwing Stones’.

This activity is suitable for ages 5+, with some parent assistance needed for younger children.

For this activity you will need: A large piece of cardboard, A ruler, A pencil, Two colours of marker or paint (I’ll be using the traditional black and white), A few handfuls of small pebbles (at least 20), Paints & paintbrush for painting pebbles (at least 4 colours) – if you can’t get these, different colours of clay will suffice, Cup, water and kitchen roll (to wash off your paint brushes).
