About Lecture: Roaring Sound: The Instruments of the Jazz Era

Roaring Sound: The Instruments of the Jazz Era

During the 1920s, jazz was all the rage and British audiences and musicians were scrambling for the newest songs and sounds. But what exactly is jazz and what made a band a ‘jazz band’? This talk will give a brief introduction of jazz as a style of music and explore the different instruments played in a typical jazz band of the 1920s. We will learn about the roles of each of the instruments within jazz and how performers pushed boundaries both musically and socially. This introduction is for any music lover and will be a fun and interactive trip back to the past. Dr Sarah Deters is the Learning and Engagement Curator at St Cecilia’s Hall, where she shares her passion and knowledge of musical instruments with visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Prior to moving to Scotland in 2011, Sarah was a curator of musical instruments at the National Music Museum at The University of South Dakota, Vermillion.
