Retired private eye Nick Charles thought he had left his successful career behind when he married wealthy heiress Nora. The couple are living the high life with their little terrier Asta and are spending Christmas in New York City.
While in the Big Apple, Nick is pressed back into service by Dorothy Wynant, the daughter of former client Clyde Wynant who left on a secret business trip and has now mysteriously disappeared.
Dorothy convinces Nick to take the case, with the assistance of his socialite wife, who is eager to see her husband in action.
