ACTIVITY: Creation of a new alpine rock garden

DATE: 20th and 27th August 2019

TIME: 10.30am – 12.30pm

VENUE: Castlebank Horticultural Centre, Lanark

Lanark Community Development Trust is calling on the local community to lend a hand to improve their local environment, and get involved in their forthcoming Volunteering Matters Action Earth project at Castlebank Horticultural Centre.

Volunteers at Castlebank Horticultural Centre, which is managed by Lanark Community Development Trust, will be working in partnership with The Haven clients and families to create a new alpine rock garden at Castlebank Horticultural Centre, transforming a bare area near the centre’s entrance. The Haven provides information and support for families affected by a range of life limiting illness. As well as the new rock garden for the local community to enjoy, the project will bring people together getting active outdoors and connecting with nature.

Vicki Burns, Be Included Be Involved Project Co-ordinator at The Haven said:

“We are delighted to be working alongside Castlebank Park on this new gardening project. It will provide a fantastic opportunity to the families we support in Clydesdale to work with others as part of a team on such a meaningful activity while enjoying some fresh air and good company at the same time.”

The activity is part of the Volunteering Matters Action Earth campaign. Grant funding for the campaign is provided by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH).

Volunteering Matters Action Earth will be supporting around 170 projects in Scotland in 2019 with grant awards of up to £500. These grants are aimed at groups who support and encourage volunteer activity through practical environmental projects.

Melissa Reilly, Development Manager with Lanark Community Development Trust, who is co-ordinating the Castlebank Horticultural Centre project, wants to see as many people as possible come along to help their activity.

“Everybody can get involved in their local outdoor spaces. They are a shared resource and a shared responsibility. From the smallest individual action to a national campaign, every contribution helps! The Volunteering Matters Action Earth grants are designed to help groups of volunteers take practical action to improve and create places for wildlife.”

If you are keen to learn new skills, improve your local environment and have fun at the same time, call 01555 728 329 or email info@lanarktrust.co.uk

If you think you might have your own great idea for a project call the Volunteering Matters Action Earth team on 07808 860356 or register at: https://volunteeringmatters.org.uk/project/action-earth
