Join us as we uncover the stories of four families that lived in the shared tenement building known as ‘The Museum Stair’. With its fragile, but remarkably unaltered interiors, ‘The Museum Stair’, has been preserved since the last occupant left in 1974, as a rare example of early Scottish industrial housing.
Discover how living conditions have changed over the years, in these well-loved and individual homes. Experience the mill workers’ decor, hear their stories and find out about their loved ones, belongings, lifestyles and aspirations.
Allyson McDermott, Historic Wallpaper Conservator says: “Within the building there is a remarkable survival of a wealth of original materials and artefacts such as paint, wallpaper, linoleum and fireplaces offering an extraordinary and arguably unique, insight into the decorative history of the “ordinary” domestic interior.”
Over 180 different wallpapers were found in The Museum Stair and this new exhibition brings some of them back to life in a state of the art ‘immersive room’.
The exhibition is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Scotland through the New Lanark Townscape Heritage/Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (TH/CARS) project. It explores the lesser known history of The Gourock Ropework Company’s ownership of this iconic site.
Caroline Clark, Director of Scotland for the National Lottery Heritage Fund, one of the key funders of the restoration of Museum Stair, said: “This fascinating exhibition gives a real insight into how the generations before us lived. It’s yet another reason to visit historic New Lanark. With the help of National Lottery investment over many years, this internationally important heritage destination has been beautifully conserved, bringing enjoyment and learning to the very many people who visit.”
Amy Eastwood, Head of Grants at Historic Environment Scotland, said: “We’re delighted to support these exhibitions through our Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) funding. We’re encouraging all visitors to explore the exhibitions and discover the stories behind the homes at this important World Heritage Site.”
The New Lanark Townscape Heritage Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (TH/CARS) project has also funded a new temporary exhibition - ‘It takes a Village’: Restoring and Conserving New Lanark’s Homes.
This free exhibition marks the completion of the four year New Lanark TH/CARS project and celebrates over 50 years of conservation, restoration and regeneration of New Lanark’s housing.
Learn all about the traditional building skills used by the many craftsmen, tradespeople and professionals involved in conserving and modernising New Lanark’s homes from 1963 up to the present day.
The New Lanark TH/CARS project is an ambitious regeneration scheme restoring the site’s last derelict housing in Double Row and revisiting buildings restored in the 1960s. Total costs for this four year, large scale regeneration project is over £4m. The two main funders are the National Lottery Heritage Fund through its Townscape Heritage (TH) programme and Historic Environment Scotland through its CARS scheme. Additional funding has been secured from the Renewable Energy Fund (South Lanarkshire Council), The Wolfson Foundation and New Lanark Trust.
