Beat the Street physical activity game is coming to Cambuslang and Rutherglen!

A popular physical activity game already embraced by many areas across Scotland is heading for Cambuslang and Rutherglen.

Beat the Street is a fun game that has been designed by a doctor to get communities moving. The idea is that by introducing a competitive element and making it fun, communities can make small lifestyle changes, such as walking or cycling to school or work every day, to improve health and help embed physical activity into everyday life.

So far more than 1.4million people and 4000 schools have taken part in games across the UK and beyond including one in the towns of Hamilton and Blantyre earlier this year where more than 8400 local residents from the two towns walked, cycled and wheeled 133,999 miles during the six-week challenge.

So, can Cambuslang and Rutherglen go further?

Beat the Street has not only had a significant impact on increasing low levels of physical activity amongst adults and children, but also helps reduce congestion, improves air quality, and helps families spend time in green spaces together.

It has recently been adapted to ensure that it’s safe to play during the COVID-19 pandemic with contactless cards and fobs.

Beat the Street Cambuslang and Rutherglen takes place from 15 September to 27 October and is open to anyone of any age who would like to take part. Children use a fob which will be provided by participating primary schools. Adults can pick up a free card from one of the distribution points listed on www.beatthestreet.me/camglen

Players then find their nearest “Beat Box” - 63 of these special sensors will soon appear on lampposts around Cambuslang and Rutherglen. Check out the online or printed map to find your nearest Beat Box and hover your card or fob over it to register the journey. Then walk, cycle or wheel to the next nearest Beat Box within an hour to score 10 points. Then keep going!

There are prizes for the teams that walk, cycle and roll the furthest, plus Kilbryde Hospice could also stand to win up to £500 if players reach a weekly target that will be set each week througout the game.

Beat the Street is being delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council with support from South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, Smarter Choices, Smarter Places and the Scottish Government.

Leader of South Lanarkshire Council, Councillor John Ross, said: “We are delighted to again be bringing the game to two new communities in our council area.

Having already seen first-hand the way it transforms whole communities, we’re delighted to launch the game across Cambuslang and Rutherglen and know that this is a great way of encouraging people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to get active together.”

More than two thirds of UK journeys are less than five miles with one in five actually less than one mile. If everyone could travel as many of these short journeys by walking, wheeling or cycling we can all help protect the air we breathe whilst playing our part in protecting our environment. By playing Beat the Street many players have realised how easy and enjoyable it is to travel these local journeys more actively and sustainably. And that these new healthier travel habits last a lifetime.
