A nature walk has been created through woodland in Motherwell thanks to local company Lisini Pub Ltd and the council.

The company successfully applied for a grant from our Net Zero Business Challenge Fund and have transformed the woodland surrounding their Dalziel Park Hotel and Golf Course into an accessible, educational, nature walk.

The project aims to support the business and provide an opportunity for local people and hotel guests to learn about the importance of biodiversity.

A series of footpaths run through the woodland, with seated areas created from recycled damaged trees. Work has also been carried out to improve the biodiversity of the area while keeping invasive species under control. Activities, including foraging and woodland bingo, will be organised for children and parents.

“This project is an excellent example of how grant funding can help a business develop new facilities for its customers and, at the same time, help the local community and environment,” said Councillor Alex McVey, Convener of the Enterprise and Fair Work Committee.

“The council has a range of support to help businesses reduce carbon emissions and achieve their net zero ambitions.”

“I am really glad I got to start the biodiversity project off with the investment from NLC as it has made a big difference” said Kay Smith coordinator of the biodiversity project and Energy and Contracts Manager at Lisini Pub Ltd.

The long-term aim for the Lisini Pub Ltd project is to increase the woodland area with new tree planting, sustainably managing and preserving older trees from damage by wind and disease, as well as incorporating bee hives to generate local produce.

Pupils from Cleland and Newarthill Primary Schools have created artwork for signs and the hotel website and are planting wildflower seeds within the woodland.

The Net Zero Business Challenge Fund was established with investment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to support businesses within North Lanarkshire to reduce their environmental impact and enhance the sustainability of their operations.
