Local scenic spots at Scottish Wildlife Trust Falls of Clyde, Cambusnethan woodlands, Motherwell Heritage Centre, Lesmahagow Show and Dalzell Estate were amongst the focal points chosen for six winning images in the competition which is the fourth and final competition in the seasonal, yearly cycle.
Field of Barley (Alison Alder, Stonehouse), Heave and Supper’s Ready (David Spinks, Lesmahagow), Motherwell Heritage Centre (John Dyer, Motherwell) and Tree Tunnel at Falls of Clyde (Marjorie Allan, Motherwell), were the five winning entries across the categories of Agriculture & Horticulture, Built Heritage, Play, Wildlife and Woodlands, selected from 100 entries.
10 year old Ewan Ambrose (Motherwell), scooped the prize for the under 16’s category, with Japanese Garden at Dalzell Estate.
The images were picked by the Heritage Lottery Fund supported Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership (CAVLP) team with the assistance of Crawford based Archibald Photography Ltd. Framed copies of the winning entries were awarded to their owners at the CAVLP Offices in New Lanark, judged on creativity and individuality as much as technical skill.
“Over the past year, we’ve been so impressed with the range of images that were sent in for each seasonal competition, which totalled more than 350 altogether,” says Sarah O’Sullivan, Communications Officer for CAVLP. “Not only are they testament to the beauty of the Clyde and Avon Valley, but the talent of all the entrants too.”
All submitted images may be selected for display in Clyde and Avon Valley exhibitions, postcards and digital interpretation of the area on the CAVLP website, alongside credit to the original photographer.
The public are being asked to vote for their favourite of the 23 overall winning images from the year by ‘liking’ the images in the photo gallery on the Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership Facebook page. Voting closes on Wednesday 12 October and the image with the most Facebook ‘likes’ will win a Family Pass to the Visitor Centre at New Lanark and a goody bag of treats from CAVLP partners.
“The 23 winning photographs from throughout the year have been taken in or around the Area of Great Landscape Value which follows the Clyde and Avon Valley from just south of Hamilton to New Lanark and Strathaven respectively,” explains Donna Marshall, CAVLP Programme Manager.
She continues, “The area is well known for attractions such as Chatelherault Country Park and New Lanark World Heritage Site but the images show a fantastic selection of the little things that make this corner of the world so unique – from close ups of spring wildlife, to wildflowers in summer, snowy tree-scapes in winter and autumnal patchworks. Get voting today!”
Following this popular photo competition, run across four seasons in the past year, a creative writing competition will be launched focussing on the landscape and cultural heritage of the Clyde and Avon Valley. Details will be announced soon at www.clydeandavonvalley.org.
To see all of the summer entries and to vote for your favourite overall image, visit the galleries on the CAVLP Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ClydeandAvonValleyLandscapePartnership. The photos are also available to view at www.clydeandavonvalley.org/news.
Plans have been agreed for the redevelopment of the centre to create a near net zero health hub. This will include improved facilities for visitors and a reduction in carbon emissions by 90%.
