The banners were created in 1990 as part of Glasgow’s European City of Culture celebrations. The exhibition will be open from Thursday 18th February – Thursday 31st March 2016, with free entry throughout.

Keeping Glasgow in Stitches was a major community arts projects organised by the community sewing project "Needleworks" and Glasgow Museums. The project was commissioned for 1990, when Glasgow was European City of Culture. The idea was to create twelve banners, one for each month of the year and the designs were to celebrate various aspects of the people, culture and life of Glasgow.

Each of the banners measure 14 feet by 4.5 feet, and as such will be displayed within New Lanark’s spectacular Gallery Room within the Institute for the Formation of Character building, which celebrates its Bicentenary in 2016.

Malcolm Lochhead was responsible for the creation of a concept design that carried through each banner and also included an "inner image" designed by other artists and craftspeople.
Over six hundred people of all ages and technical abilities were involved in creating the banners which include every conceivable technique involving thread and fabric. Each banner was made month by month in the great hall of Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery. When placed together the banners spell out GLASGOW - 1990. The River Clyde flows through the banners and changes character with the different months and happenings associated with it.

Evelyn Whitelaw, New Lanark Events & Exhibitions Officer said “The River Clyde flows through the twelve banners, making New Lanark the perfect place to exhibit them as we have the famous River Clyde on our doorstep. The banners really are a celebration of what makes Glasgow such an amazing place – the themes so relevant and recognizable to anyone who loves Glasgow. We hope that lots of people who were connected to, or involved in creating the banners will come along to see them 26 years on!”
