About Scotland’s Gardens Scheme Open Garden: Biggar’s Gardens

For the first time, Scotland's Garden Scheme visitors have the opportunity to visit some of the gardens of Biggar, a pretty historic town on the northern edge of the Southern Uplands.

An eclectic mix of up to twelve gardens will be open, each one with its own unique features and style. You will find examples of both large and small, well-established gardens with mixed plantings, wildlife and wooded areas, water interest, quirky ornamentation, productive vegetable beds and fruit tree areas. In addition, there is a small courtyard garden, a plantsman's garden on a challenging slope with wonderful views of the hills, a small but beautifully laid out Japanese garden with a very knowledgeable owner, a garden where colourful annuals are the main attraction and a new estate garden, barely four years old.

There are also interesting plantings to enjoy on Biggar High Street, maintained by a lively group of volunteers, using donated plants. Within a short walking distance between most of the gardens you will discover closes connecting the older parts of the town with places of interest indicated on the heritage trail map.

Directions: Approx 25 miles south west of Edinburgh take the A701 or A702 or 15 minutes from Junction 13 on the M74. Buses 101 or 102 from Edinburgh or train to Lanark and then bus 191.
