The Steamie conjures up a nostalgic view of a disappearing Glasgow in the years after the Second World War.
One Hogmanay in the early 1950s Dolly, Magrit, Doreen and Mrs Culfeathers – four Glasgow women of various ages and personalities – gather in the local wash-house (or “steamie”) to do their last laundry of the year. They are helped (and hindered) by the steamie’s maintenance man, Andy. They share memories and jokes, talk about their menfolk and their hopes for the future, and sing a few songs. It is nostalgic and very funny. A simple but long-drawn out anecdote in which Mrs Culfeathers talks about buying mince from a certain butcher has become legendary.
As the original publicity put it, ‘It’s worth burstin’ yer biler tae see.’
