An Open meeting in the Village Community Hall in The Wynd at 2pm on Thursday 22 September will gauge public interest in starting a new local u3a. Everyone is welcome to come and hear what u3as do and how the u3a movement will help a Cumbernauld steering group.
u3a in Scotland chair, Anne Walsh explained: “Over fifty Scottish communities, from villages to cities, have set up these sociable, self-help learning co-operatives. During the past 18 months, we’ve had a few enquiries from people who wanted to join a u3a in Cumbernauld.
“We realise this is a community brimming with talents and skills. So we are inviting anyone willing to share their knowledge and expertise for free to help kick start a Cumbernauld u3a. 2022 celebrates the 40th anniversary of the u3a movement, with around 10,000 members across Scotland.
"We hope for a good turnout on 22 September so people understand what u3as can offer their community. It’s also a chance to quiz speakers from established u3as. We’ve told local councillors, politicians and the Older People’s Champion about this meeting.”
Scotland now has 51 community u3as where people enjoy trying out new activities and groups. Each u3a is volunteer-led and locally run by people who no longer work full time. For a modest annual fee of around £20 a year, members can learn a new hobby or take up a new interest just for fun. Members can join as many of their local u3a groups as they wish.
