The Heart & Soul Community Gospel Choir performs a range of soul, swing and gospel songs with the backing of the famous Heart & Soul Swing Band. The band has been raising funds for the Church of Scotland’s HIV programme for just under a decade, by performing to audiences all over Scotland. They were joined by the choir in 2019 and so far have raised over £30,000 for HIV research and treatment.
Members of the Heart & Soul Gospel Choir are not required to have any prior experience, or to be able to read music. Musical Director, Lindsey Cullen (Shuttleworth) is a registered music therapist, running the choir alongside her work in children and adult mental health. She believes that everyone deserves the chance to do what makes them happy; and that singing is one of the greatest things you can do to improve your mental health!
We are inspired by those incredible singers who take traditional church music and set it alight! Think Aretha Franklin, Ruby Turner, Nina Simone… As well as taking inspiration from Big Bands and latin music. Many of the songs we perform were born out of slavery, and blend praise and glory with visceral human suffering. We try to be sensitive to this while giving a platform for an uplifting, energetic, electric way of bringing religious music to Scottish venues.
The entry requirements are simple: we welcome anyone regardless of background, race, gender, disability or sexual orientation. If you want to sing, we want to sing with you.
The choir rehearses every Saturday at St. John’s Church in Hamilton, from 12pm until 2pm. Membership costs £5 per week and includes 2 hours tuition plus original music arrangements and audio recordings for those who don’t read music. Term dates vary so please get in touch for details via our Facebook page @heartsoulchoir or by emailing Lindsey directly at lindsey_shuttleworth@hotmail.com.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
