A new u3a in Cumbernauld looks promising after 13 people recently attended an Open meeting in the Wynd Village Hall to gauge local interest. The next step is to hold a follow-up meeting for anyone willing to help start up a u3a. This event takes place on Wednesday 26 October at 2pm in the Cornerstone House Centre, 1 Esk Walk, Cumbernauld G67 1 BZ.
u3a in Scotland chair, Anne Walsh explained: “It’s been a positive and encouraging start. Local people can see the benefits of new peer-support learning activities in Cumbernauld. This area has many individuals no longer working full time who have loads of skills and experience. A u3a gives people the chance to share what they know and enjoy with others.
“Lots of our 10,000 Scottish members will be celebrating this year’s 40th anniversary of u3a. The movement is run by local volunteers who are keen to try new hobbies and activities. We already know u3a is good for your brain health and your social life! We welcome a good turnout on 26th October, as people start to plan how their own Cumbernauld u3a will work.”
Scotland now has 52 community u3as. The latest u3a opened just last month in Banchory, in Royal Deeside. For a modest yearly fee (around £25) members can learn a new skill or interest just for the fun of it. People can join as many of their local u3a groups as they wish.
