Set in the late 1970’s this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic. Following the working hours of 9 to 5 Judy, Doralee, and Violet work together at a big corporate office under their misogynistic and bullying boss, Franklin Hart Jr. After a series of frustrations, they hatch a plan to take control of the office, improve their working conditions, and teach Hart a lesson.
9 to 5 began as a 1980 film inspired by the real-life Boston-based women’s advocacy group “9to5,” which fought for secretaries’ rights in the 1970s. Jane Fonda developed the movie after learning about the group’s activism, teaming up with Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton—who also wrote the iconic theme song. The comedic story about three office workers overthrowing their sexist boss struck a chord with audiences, blending humour with sharp social commentary. Decades later, Parton and co-writer Patricia Resnick adapted it into a musical, keeping its message of workplace equality and female solidarity alive.
