Cycling network map now online

Cyclists across South Lanarkshire can now access a mapping resource showing the cycle network across the area.

The map also features associated cycle parking and storage shelters which will allow people to stay active and continue to build walking and cycling into their everyday journeys.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor John Anderson said: “Looking after your mental and physical wellbeing during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak is more important now than ever before.

“The Scottish Government’s ‘Clear Your Head’ campaign is encouraging people to keep up new healthy habits they may have started during the pandemic. Making time to get active and do one thing, however big or small, can help people feel calmer and improve your mental health.

“Many more people have been enjoying the benefits that have come from walking and cycling more during lockdown.

“And the improved air quality and quieter roads have also helped encourage uptake of these more environmentally friendly ways of travelling around local towns and villages.”

The full core path network is also available online and this shows the main routes which are available for walking and cycling across the area (note: not all routes displayed are suitable for cycling).

The Sustrans website is another resource which shows how the National Cycle Routes within South Lanarkshire link to Glasgow and beyond and would be useful for those planning a commute out with South Lanarkshire or for planning longer leisure journeys.

Councillor Anderson added: “By building a little (or a lot) of walking and cycling into your everyday activity you will be investing not only in your health but the world around you. Be part of the solution to pollution!”
