Last year's competition for South Lanarkshire Council's Roads department saw Gritter Thunberg, Lewis Caploughdi, Salt Disnae, Oh Plougher of Scotland, Nitty McGritty, Gritty McVitie, Snow Coo and Spready Mercury out gritting the roads, supported by Snow Blow Patrol the snow blower.
This year another eight gritters are in the name game.
All of the area's P4 to P7 pupils have been asked to get their thinking caps on to come up with the punniest seasonal names they can think of.
Councillor Julia Marrs, Chair of the Road Safety Forum said: “Last year’s competition was a huge success and judging the entries was fun. It’s great seeing the named gritters out on South Lanarkshire’s roads and I’m sure everyone has their favourite. 2020 has been a year like no other, and I’m pleased we can still do some fun things. I’m already hearing from excited children suggesting names, but we’ll still be dealing with winter weather, and another eight named vehicles being spotted on the roads will help highlight the dangers of travelling during bad winter weather and how much work goes into keeping our roads safe and South Lanarkshire moving.
“Good luck to all the schools who are entering the competition – I’m looking forward to seeing how creative you’ve all been this year.”
