Six town centres in South Lanarkshire introduce 20mph limits

Six town centres in South Lanarkshire have had temporary 20mph speed limits introduced.

The areas will be monitored and following consultation a decision will be taken on whether the speed limits will become permanent.

The six towns involved in this pilot initiative are Bothwell, Carluke, Lanark, Larkhall, Strathaven and Uddingston.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor John Anderson, said: “These 20mph cordons in six of our town centres will help encourage active travel as vehicles will be moving slower through the areas.

“We will introduce signage around the areas affected, and other measures will also be in put in place moving forward to try and change driver behaviour.

“We want to be clear that driving at 20mph is the right thing to do in any town centre area and would encourage all road users to comply with the new limits.”

Police Scotland have been made aware of the changes and will be responsible for any enforcement action.

Funding for the zones has come from the Scottish Government’s Spaces for People project, which was launched in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to support social distancing and active travel messages as well providing an outside environment where this can take place.

A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) is currently in place, which allows a swifter implementation of revised speed limits than a standard Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).

Following the monitoring period, a full TRO process will take place which will include the usual consultees and processes.
