Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson’s masterpiece, Holmwood House in the southside, and Tenement House in Garnethill will again welcome visitors after being forced to close during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Holmwood re-opened for the first time last week since the easing of lockdown safety measures with Tenement House re-opening this Friday (July 2).
Both properties are cared for by the National Trust for Scotland and will re-open with a range of Covid-19 safety measures in place.
For lovers of architecture and design, Holmwood House is a great spot to uncover Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson’s original design schemes. The intricate and colourful designs created by the Victorian architect have been restored for visitors to enjoy – where free-hand painting and delicate layers of design can be admired.
Visitors can be transported back to early 20th century Glasgow life at the Tenement House. Located near Charing Cross, this property shows the home of two women as a time capsule, where visitors can learn all about Glasgow’s past and what it was like to be an independent woman at the time.
In addition to the permanent displays, visitors will now be able to experience the new exhibition ‘The Past in the Post: Special delivery from yesterday’, which examines some of the letters left behind by previous tenants and the secret language of stamps.
Holmwood House and Tenement House are both in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, the conservation charity that over 90 years has saved, maintained and shared many of the country’s most loved places.
Sam Gallacher, Glasgow Operations Manager for the National Trust for Scotland said: “The whole team at Holmwood is really looking forward to welcoming our visitors back and show them the newly conserved spaces of the house. There is something quite special about Thompsons designs for Holmwood, he had a strong vision and loads of creativity, and this inspiring place deserves to be experienced once again!”
Ana Sanchez-De la Vega, Visitor Services Supervisor for the National Trust for Scotland in Glasgow said: “The Tenement House represents some of the best examples of what the Trust stands for – a great story, beautifully preserved interiors, an amazing atmosphere, and a real sense of our past. We know how much people love this place and we're delighted to be able to reopen our property at the heart of Glasgow this summer.
“All of our properties across Glasgow have been preparing to make visits as safe as possible. Pre-booking is in place at a few of our sites and there are smaller groups for the tours. We’d highly recommend booking your slot in advance to avoid any disappointment.”
Holmwood’s tearoom offers hot and cold drinks, as well as a selection of cakes and ice creams that can be enjoyed in the grounds. Tickets for the property tour can be booked 12am to 16:00, Saturdays and Sundays.
Tickets for the Tenement House tours must be pre-booked, and visitors can visit between 10am and 4:20pm, Friday-Sunday. The giftshop will also be accessible during these hours.
The Trust is urging anyone planning to visit to check the latest opening information on www.nts.org.uk before travelling, as some properties have different opening patterns this summer.
The website also contains information for visitors on the safety measure that will be in place for visits - www.nts.org.uk/stories/what-to-expect-when-visiting-our-places.
