The production has gained acclaim by winning a Herald Angel Award at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and was runner up for the Scottish Arts Awards.
Promoting an evocative soundtrack, poetic text and expressive visuals, this intimate solo dance theatre work is loosely structured around creator and performer Christine Devaney’s childhood memories, in collaboration with musician Luke Sutherland and artist Yvonne Buskie.
The poignant, personal piece has inspired Cumbernauld Theatre’s Senior Youth Theatre, aging from S4 to S6 classes, to create a performance which responds to the themes of growing up, life and death, the passing of time and love, which are present in And The Birds Did Sing. The group of budding performers participate in the Take Part workshops organised by Cumbernauld Theatre Trust, which bring together young people wishing to develop skills in acting, writing and devising for stage, screen and beyond with the opportunity to create original film and theatre works.
Youth Leaders at Cumbernauld Youth Theatre said: “The performance we have made uses the Curious Seed show And the Birds Did Sing as a starting point. We have been writing, moving and experimenting together as a group. It has been amazing to see the youth theatre performers rise to the challenge and take creative risks with the material they have made. There are moments of joy and excitement as well as a thoughtful and meditative tone in the work. The performance looks back on personal life moments, remembering people and places alongside hopes and dreams for the future. As Kyle says in the performance:
“It’s about life and death. It’s about love. It’s about remembering. It’s about constantly beginning. About clouds that pass and never come back.””
Showcasing a delicate balance between sadness and joy at its heart, And The Birds Did Sing incorporates dance, spoken word, visuals, and music, with humour and tenderness.
This is about living but it began with a death.
This is about existing and not existing, and a child’s heart-bursting belief that there is something in between.
This is about love.
And The Birds Did Sing will take stage in the Main Auditorium at Lanternhouse on Tuesday 26th March for one performance only.
