When Claire, a priest, survives a mass shooting she sets out on a quest to answer the most difficult question of all: ‘Why?’. The Events is a journey that takes her to the edge of reason, science, politics and faith.
The play, which won the Carol Tamber Best of Edinburgh Award in 2013, is a hugely moving and timely exploration of the complexities of forgiveness, resilience and the power of community in the face of tragedy.
Michael Duke, Executive Producer of The Events, said: “This is an unbelievable play. So gripping and moving, and so relevant to the times we’re living in. It’s going to start a lot of conversations and debates for sure – it has struck a chord with audiences wherever it has been produced across the world.”
Bringing this poignant production to life is Director and Wonder Fools Co-Founder, Jack Nurse. The creative process brings together professional talent Claire Lamont and Sam Stopford with a Community Choir formed of residents from across North Lanarkshire. The team further includes music by John Browne, set and costume by Becky Minto, lighting design by Lizzie Powell and the Community Choir led by Clare Haworth.
Jack Nurse, Director of The Events, said: “I could not be more thrilled to be directing The Events by David Greig. It is a modern Scottish classic and feels like it was written for today. It's been a particular pleasure to start a new choir from scratch in North Lanarkshire who we have been collaborating with since June. We have an outstanding professional cast in Claire Lamont and Sam Stopford who are bringing the play to life with extraordinary vitality and skill. I can't wait for audiences to see their work.”
The Events will run at Lanternhouse Main Auditorium from Sat 28 September to Sat 5 October, with an opening press performance on Tue 1 October at 7.30pm.
