The Steamie, created by celebrated Scottish actor, director and writer Tony Roper, will embark on a national tour starting in Dundee Rep Theatre on August 27 next year before heading to Ayr, Stirling, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dunfermline and Glasgow.
The heartfelt stage play, which has cemented itself as a cultural phenomenon in Scotland, is being produced by Ryan Dewar and Louise McCarthy for Rerr Terr Productions and Jason Haigh-Ellery in association with Neil Laidlaw Productions and Dundee Rep Theatre, with Tony Roper himself returning to direct.
Speaking on the comeback, Tony said: “I am delighted to announce that the official tour of The Steamie is going to be on tour again in 2026. This follows a phenomenal success at the Hydro in Glasgow 2019.
“The Steamie has been like an old friend to me and is almost like a member of my family.
“We hope you will once again join us for an evening that is special to thousands of audiences over the decades that have rolled with laughter, cried their eyes out and proudly recognised how wonderful and precious these women were without having a clue that they would become enshrined in the memories of their sons and daughters and indeed also in their great grandchildren.”
Joining forces with Tony to stage the widely regarded classic from Rerr Terr Productions are television, theatre and local comedy legend Louise McCarthy, and director and producer Ryan Dewar: both whose connections and adoration for Roper’s trademark work span further than this next production.
Louise, best known as one half of comedy duo ‘The Dolls’, portrayed Magrit in the 2019 Hydro production, and says being involved in this reprise is ‘beyond anything she could’ve ever imagined’.
She said: “The Steamie is the reason I became an actor; it holds such a special place in my life. I auditioned for stage school using Magrit’s famed ‘wonderful to be a wummin’ monologue and it’s stayed with me ever since.
“We’re not trying to reinvent The Steamie, it’s a classic for a reason. With Tony directing, this version will be as close to the original as you can get. We want to keep passing the show on to the next generation, so the production will feel fresh, but it will never lose its heart or originality. This will be a beautiful trip down memory lane that can be shared by every generation of the family.”
The play, which has over the decades transcended the stage to become a staple of Scottish cultural life, is regarded by many performers as a ‘gift’ thanks to its raw, funny and deeply human script: a stance that producer Ryan, who was the live camera director and associate director of the 2019 Hydro production, echoes: “When Louise and I sat down to discuss the idea of bringing back The Steamie, we both landed on the same thought: how do we share it with the next generation?
“That’s what we’re most excited about, introducing this tour with the play everyone loves, while welcoming new audiences alongside those who’ve cherished it for generations before. It taps into something universal. Friendship, struggle, pride, and memory. That’s why it lasts. It’s not just a play people watch, it’s one you feel like you've lived.”
Casting for the show will be announced in spring of 2026, with the production duo – who met at Riggs Dry Cleaning & Laundry at Candleriggs to celebrate the news - saying they are ‘super excited’ to share more in due course.
Tickets for most dates – including Dundee, Ayr, Stirling, Dunfermline and Glasgow – will go on sale on Wednesday 26 November, with Edinburgh following with general sale on 3 December.
Louise added: “People love The Steamie because it’s like a big warm blanket. You know you’re going to laugh; you know you’ll have a wee greet and a singsong, it’s got everything. It’s a show that brings families together, something for the young and the old, and everyone in between.”
