Join us for an afternoon of live music, art, food, and storytelling with performances from artist Gameli Tordzro, a specially commissioned film by Mara Menzies and the launch of a new zine exploring untold stories at David Livingstone Birthplace Museum (DLBM).
The event is organised by David Livingstone Birthplace Exchange Group in partnership with Best Way Community Development and the Congolese Community of Motherwell.
Please note the film, art installation and zine are available to see all day. The band will play throughout the day but will be taking intermittent breaks. Timings for workshops and food are below.
ART
Tingatinga installation by artist Josie KO. Originating in East Africa, Tingatinga art is characterised by a naïve style using bright colours and humour. Josie is a sculptor and member of the DLB Exchange Group. There will also be an opportunity to try some Tingatinga glass painting on the day!
WORKSHOPS
Inspired by objects in the museum collection, the DLB Exchange group has commissioned a storytelling and mbila (xylophone) workshop with an accompanying performance from Gameli Tordzro. Gameli is an artist and researcher who teaches traditional African music.

FILM
Film by the storyteller and artist, Mara Menzies. Using research conducted by the DLB Exchange Group, this commissioned piece is centred around David Livingstone’s crew members, Susi and Chuma. It explores the objects that belong to them that are now held in the museum’s collection.
FOOD + DRINKS 2pm – 3pm
Come and enjoy Swahili food from East Africa! Pilau, chapati, mandazi, kuku choma (roast chicken), kachori, bhajia, vitumbua, and peas in coconut sauce. Swahili cuisine is a mixture of Arabic, Indian and Bantu with lots of herbs and spices.
MUSIC
Live music from 'The Gig Group', a new band of Congolese musicians from the Scottish diaspora playing Afro-Congo, pop, reggae, seben/rumba, Afrobeat and more!
ZINE
Riso printed booklet produced by the DLB Exchange Group documenting the research project and exploring untold stories in the museum collections. Designed by Inès Gradot at Risotto Studio.
The DLB Exchange Group consists of 6 participants of South Asian, African, and Caribbean heritage who have been researching objects in the DLBM collection to develop new creative projects that challenge and expand on established representations of diaspora experiences. As part of the Community-Led Collections Research Project in partnership with the National Museum of Scotland and National Maritime Museum.
This event is part of the Refugee Festival Scotland 2022 Programme.
