A free event, held outside the main rainforest area of Amazonia within M&D’s Scotland’s Theme Park, there will be a range of activities over the weekend including balloon modelling, badge making, a bee trail, hive demonstrations and honey tasting! The usual entry fees apply to going inside the main rainforest area of Amazonia.
Visitors will be able learn all about honeybees and might catch a glimpse of them working away in and out of their hive weather permitting.
Amanda Gott, Zoo Manager and beekeeper at Amazonia said: “It’s important we highlight the significance of these amazing insects. Bees are in such decline and a loss of honeybees will have a devastating effect on agriculture and food supply. Around a third of all our food depends on pollination from bees and other pollinating insects.”
Amazonia houses a collection of mainly South American plants and animals including several rare species. The attraction re-creates the temperature of the Amazon rainforest and visitors can witness a range of creatures and attend various educational talks delivered by zoo staff.
Throughout the day there are regular handling sessions where visitors can get up close and personal to exotic species. Visitors can hold and touch the animals in controlled settings and learn all about fascinating creatures from around the world.
