Led by The Lanarkshire Songwriters, the project will include interviews with growers past and present which will form the basis from which the Songwriters will create new stories and songs. It is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund supported Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership (CAVLP) and Renewable Energy Fund managed by South Lanarkshire Council.
Three local primary schools will also work with the Songwriters to create songs about the diminishing industry, giving them an insight into the unique horticultural heritage of the Clyde Valley – once known as the Fruit Basket of Scotland.
Lanarkshire Songwriter Billy Stewart, who will be leading the project says, “This project is very special to me as my family were involved in local fruit growing and horticulture. The songwriters are very excited about taking this particular project forward.”
The new legacies created by the project - oral histories and new songs written by both the Songwriters and schools, will all be available on CD and a new Lanarkshire Songwriters website to be launched early next year. Special concerts will also take place as the project comes to a close next autumn.
Song writing workshops will also be held by the popular Songwriters group for anyone interested in learning more about how to write your own song.
Donna Marshall, Programme Manager at CAVLP states, “We’re so pleased to support this wonderful project that will bring to life a unique part of the area’s heritage through song. CAVLP support over 70 projects throughout the Clyde and Avon valleys, but this is the only one that encourages experience of the landscape through song.”
The Lanarkshire Songwriters have been an established act on the local music scene for 18 years, meeting regularly at the Crossford Inn and are always open to new members. The group have a strong tradition of writing local folk songs, so new material generated by Fruits of Their Labours will sit nicely alongside their repertoire which includes songs on the themes of Lanarkshire war heroes, Clydesdale horses, Covenanters and many more.
