From traditional building materials, to Scotland’s ‘100 best buildings’ New Lanark is hosting two of 2016’s most prominent architectural exhibitions, ‘Building Scotland’ and ‘Scotstyle’ over the summer period with free entry for both.
The two exhibitions will run simultaneously from 2nd June in the River Room within the Institute for the Formation of Character at New Lanark. This is a particularly apt location for the exhibitions to be viewed as the Institute, which is one of New Lanark’s most iconic buildings, is celebrating its Bicentenary in 2016 after being opened on 1 January 1816 by Robert Owen himself.
Building Scotland is a travelling exhibition which gives visitors the chance to gain a fascinating insight into the diverse materials that have been the building blocks of Scotland’s traditional villages, cities and their relevance today. New Lanark is hosting the exhibition in association with Historic Environment Scotland through its programme of activities linked to Visit Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. Building Scotland will be open at New Lanark daily from 2 June – 12 August (closed on 1 August).
Scotstyle is a showcase of the one-hundred ‘best’ buildings from Scotland’s last one-hundred years, and is part of a touring exhibition, online and in print at venues across Scotland. Scotstyle is one of over 400 events taking place across Scotland in 2016 as part of the Festival of Architecture celebrations. Scotstyle will be open at New Lanark daily from 2 June – 31 July.
Evelyn Whitelaw, New Lanark Events & Exhibitions Officer said: “We’re delighted that we are able to host both Building Scotland and Scotstyle exhibitions this summer. As one of Scotland’s 6 World Heritage Sites and with buildings over 200 years old - New Lanark really is the perfect host! We hope that visitors will enjoy learning about traditional building materials and some of the most iconic buildings across the country.”
