Beat the Street CamGlen returns – a free game for the residents of Cambuslang and Rutherglen to score points and win prizes for walking, running, cycling and scooting as far as possible in six weeks!
This will be the seventh time the Beat the Street competition has taken place in South Lanarkshire, and once again, challenges schools, workplaces and community groups to clock up as many active travel miles as possible during the six week-game.
Beat the Street ‘CamGlen’ is open to anyone of any age and ability - children and adults alike. Approximately 60 beeping and flashing sensors called ‘Beat Boxes’ will be placed on lampposts around the area for the duration of the game. Players use a free game card or the Beat the Street app and once the game is underway, find the first of these Beat Boxes to start their journey. Walk, cycle, run, scoot, wheel or roll to the next one on the map within an hour to score 10 points. The further players go and the more Beat Boxes they tap, the more points they will score.
Over the course of the six-week competition, the teams that clock up the highest number of points will win vouchers for sports equipment or books and there are ‘lucky tap’ prizes given out to individuals during the game.
There are also leaderboards for the highest number of average points, meaning that teams of all sizes are in with a chance of winning prizes.
Beat the Street was developed by Dr William Bird, a GP who wanted to get people active and to get communities walking together. The game has just celebrated its two millionth participant.
Beat the Street Cambuslang and Rutherglen is being delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council. The project is supported by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture and is funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.
Councillor Robert Brown, South Lanarkshire Council’s Chair of Community and Enterprise Resources, said: “I am particularly glad to welcome Beat the Street back to Rutherglen and Cambuslang. I have a strong recollection of being dragged round the check in points by my granddaughter who was then about four.
“There was a great air of excitement amongst all the primary children in the area - it was a great incentive to them and their families to walk to and from school more and to be aware of the health benefits of active travel.
“Beat the Street definitely moves the dial on active travel. I am sure it will be a huge success again this year.”
