"The Widespread Destruction of Ukraine: Life and Death of a Town
Since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the devastation has been unimaginable, with every battle, bombing, and missile strike leaving deep scars across the country. The destruction is so vast that more buildings have been obliterated in Ukraine than if all of Manhattan were levelled four times over. Over 900 schools, hospitals, churches, and other protected sites have been damaged, violating international laws and leaving countless communities in ruin. Maryinka, a small town in eastern Ukraine, stands as a poignant symbol of this devastation. Its cherished landmarks and homes have been reduced to rubble, leaving residents homeless and heartbroken. The memories of a once vibrant community now haunt the dreams of those who fled, as they grapple with the overwhelming loss of their town and way of life."

A talk introducing the intricately embroidered Ukrainian ceremonial cloth called a "Rushnyk". In this brief presentation I will give a background on these beautiful artefacts, talk about the variety of different styles abundant across Ukraine, and then speak more in detail about the sacred "tree of life" motifs. These much rarer examples will be available to view in person on the day.
I will also touch upon the curation, acquisition, cataloguing and digitisation of these objects, and our ambitious plans for the future of our humble museum.
Tickets are FREE, but pre-booking is essential.
Please contact the museum to reserve your space.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
